Homeowners Gary and Janet Lee revamped their backyard with a custom pergola, overseeing their eavestrough. The completed structure stands almost 11’ high in the mild, sunny climate of San Jose, California.

Opting for a minimal-style pergola with rafters spaced 3’ apart, the overhead design is completely exposed to the elements. Although the openness allows blue skies to be seen, the mid-day heat prevents the homeowners and their sweet dog Sugar, from truly enjoying the space.

ShadeFX customized a 14’ x 14’ retractable canopy in a Sunbrella Crest Birch fabric. The anodized track is mounted horizontally along a single rafter with matching aluminum stabilizers located on the inside of the pergola beams.

Installation was carried out by Davis & Associates, a group of licensed architects and general contractors from neighboring Sunnyvale. Their attention to the fine details made for a perfect partnership, allowing the Lees to remain hands-free and stress-free throughout the process.

As seen, the height of the shade would make it a challenge for the charismatic couple to operate using the detachable handle. With the recommendation from their Product Specialist, the canopy easily extends and retracts using a rope operated system.

Accordingly, the new extension of their home is now in use by all members of the house, throughout all Californian seasons.
