Helping You Choose Between a Deck and a Patio
Both a deck and a patio provide outdoor living spaces that are ideal for entertaining friends and family, unwinding with a glass of wine at the end of a hectic day, or simply enjoying the tranquility of nature. But how do you know which one is most appropriate for your lifestyle, budget, and needs? And what’s the difference between a patio and a deck? Although homeowners often use the terms interchangeably, there are differences, so let’s start by defining a patio and a deck.
What is a Patio?
A patio refers to an outdoor living space that is built at ground level. Patios can be attached or detached to the house and built with a variety of materials including concrete, pavers, stone, tile, or brick. Although not as common, patios can also be built out of wood. Patios are often designed as part of the landscaping. These outdoor living spaces may or may not have a shade covering and can include could-have features such as an outdoor kitchen, fireplace, or outdoor lighting.
What is a Deck?
Decks on the other hand, can be built at different heights and need support systems and railings. Primarily made of wood, composite wood, or vinyl, decks can be built near the ground off the lower floor of a home or off an upper room to take advantage of a view. Like patios, decks can be attached or freestanding. When properly cared for, a wood deck offers beauty and warmth. Elements such as shade structures, outdoor kitchens, and lighting can be added to decks as well.
Which Should You Choose?
Once you understand the differences between these two outdoor spaces, you can decide which will better suit your needs.
The location of your outdoor space will play a large factor in your decision. Do you want to incorporate the landscaping into the overall design of your outdoor living area? Do you need an outdoor space around an in-ground pool for cooking, entertaining, and sitting? Then a patio is probably your best choice. On the other hand, if you want to take advantage of a view, need an outdoor space off an upstairs bedroom, or want to build an outdoor space on a slope, a deck is most likely your best bet.
Since budget is always a consideration, keep in mind that decks are typically more expensive. Of course, the price will vary depending on materials used, the location of the outdoor space, the size, and added features. Nonetheless, according to the National Association of Realtors, decks can cost twice as much as a patio. In addition, unlike patios, decks are considered structures that typically require detailed construction requirements as well as permits and inspections.
On the other hand, if you plan to sell your home in the future, a deck generally offers more return on your investment (ROI). HouseLogic estimates that the ROI for a deck is 75%; homeowners can expect to recoup 30% to 60% of the cost of a patio.
One more thing to consider is the differences in maintenance requirements. Wood decks require more maintenance than patios. Synthetic decks, on the other hand, are low-maintenance and only require periodic cleaning like patios.
Consider all the above factors and it should become apparent whether a patio or deck will best suit your unique needs. No matter which outdoor space you choose, either one is a wonderful addition that offers unlimited possibilities for relaxing, entertaining, socializing. Consider adding a retractable roof or canopy, which works well for both patios and decks, and you’ll have an ideal outdoor space you can enjoy year round.
