On Missouri’s western edge, straddling the border with Kansas, sits a city known for its barbecue, jazz and dozens of fountains. Kansas City is home to a diverse population of more than 2 million who enjoy its desirable cost of living, optimal job market, and growing creative community.
Built in the “City of Fountains”, is a Cape Cod inspired home with an amazing outdoor space. Designed with outdoor living a top priority, its modern accordion glass doors at the back retract open onto a wooden deck. The homeowners set up the deck space as an outdoor dining area complete with a grill and smoker for outdoor cooking.
To extend the home’s square footage and for a seamless transition from indoor to outdoor, the homeowners sought out flexible coverage over the deck. Working closely with the homeowners, ShadeFX customized a 20′ x 12′ motorized retractable canopy in a Sunbrella Navy fabric. The canopy was specified with a tilt ensuring that any rainwater would shed away from the house.
“ShadeFX is wonderful! We loved working with them from start to finish. The shades are easy to install by yourself with a little bit of DIY skills, and their engineering team is great for advice on any additional bracing you may need. The instruction manuals are incredibly detailed and really useful to read prior to purchase so you can get a good idea on the details of the installation. I also highly recommend the motor-driven unit – it’s fantastic.”

On a nice day when the doors are retracted, with a push of a button, so can the canopy. The motorized operation and reduced canopy drop also allow the homeowners to add hanging lights underneath without impeding the backward and forward motion of the canopy.
