I sent measurements and specs to Kevin and he was right there answering every question I had every step of the way. 3 weeks later it was at the house. I was nervous because I didn't have any cross beams, but it didn’t matter because they had engineered it to fit perfectly. As a designer, I am always looking for great products to incorporate into my designs. The retractable canopy system that we ordered from ShadeFX has been instrumental of our new patio build with the move to a new restaurant space last summer. The kissing canopy’s orientation allows for quick manual extension/retraction that our servers are able to operate quite easily, allowing for direct sunlight when wanted, or able to provide shade from the hot sun or shelter from light rains for our 38-seat deck patio from May through November. We originally designed this project utilizing an overhead fixed aluminum louvered (fins) system with the fins spaced to allow east and north light through while blocking the north and west light from March through September. Our clients had no desire to use their deck when it rained so protecting for rain wasn’t an issue. The new deck is the same size as the previous deck structure area. The previous deck was mostly unusable because of the direct sun light from the south and west and was a multi-tiered deck. There was one small area of that deck that was usable during daylight and only large enough for their family of four. Our client loved outdoor entertaining, but they couldn’t do any entertain during daylight hours. By making the deck surface all one level and adding the overhead fixed louvered system we were able to solve for our clients entertaining challenges. While during construction there were some issues with the contractor, and we needed to find another solution for creating the desirable shade. We looked at other options prior to selecting ShadeFX as the best solution for providing shade. We particularly liked the organic feel of the fabric canopy and the option to introduce another texture and color to the simple redwood pergola structure.
